In an era when many classic movies are getting ‘rebooted’ (the most recent of which being a new version of Red Dawn), the next film in line for a do-over appears to be 1984 comedy/horror release Gremlins.
Warner Bros. are currently said to be in negotiations with Steven Spielberg-owned Amblin Entertainment over rights to the intellectual property of the franchise, and while the film has been suggested several times since its original version for a remake, this story appears to be the closest that such a project has reached, according to Vulture.
Previous attempts to remake the Joe Dante film (and potentially its 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch) were shut down primarily by Spielberg (who produced for both originals), with the price that he has set for the rights and a condition that he is involved directly in any Gremlins project.
The original 1984 film, which starred Zach Galligan, saw a teenager become the owner of a cute but potentially deadly pet that come with a clear and obviously-ignored warning of ‘don’t feed them after midnight’. While the story will already be known to anyone anticipating a remake, will they want to see it through a slightly different angle if Warner Bros. takes over?
